Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit non-denominational Christian housing organization. We welcome all people to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. Homes are built from volunteer labor, private donations, and the hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" by each partner family the homes are sold to the partner families at no-profit and no-interest mortgage. The homeowner's monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund that is used to build more houses. Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate according to race, religion, or ethnic group. Habitat is not a giveaway program. It is a hand up not a hand out. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Habitat houses are affordable for low income families because there is no profit included in the sale price. Mortgage length varies from seven to 30 years. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia. Habitat for Humanity International, to date has completed over 200,000 homes (which house over 1,000,000 people) worldwide in over 3,000 Communities worldwide. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Moses Lake was founded 1997 with construction efforts beginning in 1998. As of 2008, Habitat has built 8 houses in Moses Lake.
